Henlopen

So long summer! Thanks for everything!

To formally say goodbye to the summer season, Shayla, the kids, and I packed up the truck, cruised on over to Delaware and set up camp at Cape Henlopen State Park.

Just outside the town of Lewes, Cape Henlopen was set aside for public use by none other than William Penn. The area that is now the state park played an important strategic role in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World War I and World War II. During the second World War, the area became home to Fort Miles, a defensive outpost built to defend the Delaware Bay should Germany have decided to attack U.S. soil. Now, the fort has been abandoned by the military but many of the buildings remain open and accessible to park visitors.

We had a great time while at Cape Henlopen and look forward to going back there again sometime. Most of our time was spent at the beach, but we also took the time to climb up one of the military towers, stop at the ferry terminal (you can catch a ferry from here that will take you across the bay to New Jersey), and make S'mores.

Max and Isla both had a great time at the beach, although Isla didn't care for the water too much. I think the waves may have been too intimidating for her. They were pretty decent waves, thanks to Hurricane Igor brewing out in the Atlantic Ocean.

On our way home, Max informed us that he had to poop. Not really the words you want to hear when flying down the interstate, without a bathroom in sight. We asked him if he could hold it for a while and he said he could, but then a few minutes later he said, "It's starting to come out of my bum!"

Needless to say, we decided to stop. Luckily we were close to the DC Temple, so we pulled off there to make use of the visitor's center facilities. It was Max's first visit to the DC temple, and although we didn't tell him where we were going, the minute the temple spires came in to view, he immediately knew what it was. We walked around the temple grounds for a little bit, making for a perfect end to our little weekend vacation.
