Great American Road Trip! - Day 1

Today we left the comforts of home and hit the open road! This was the first day of our trip across our great nation! We left St. George just before noon, made our way through Colorado City and Fredonia, AZ, over the Kaibab Plateau and Jacob Lake, and down to Marble Canyon and the Navajo Bridge.

For those who have never been to Marble Canyon, there are two Navajo Bridges, an old one, and a new one that replaced the old one. The original bridge is now open to pedestrian traffic only. We stopped at the Navajo Bridge for lunch and to walk across the original bridge. While we were there we were lucky enough to see one of the huge California Condors that live in the area flying around and circling above us for about ten or fifteen minutes!

After a couple of hours, we loaded the kids back into the truck and continued down the road. We got to Flagstaff at about 6:00 pm. The temperature in Flagstaff was considerably cooler than Marble Canyon. We only stopped long enough to find The Cracker Barrel for dinner. After eating and letting Max check out the toys in the gift shop, we hopped back into the truck and struck out for Phoenix!

We got to Phoenix at about 9:00 pm, which for us, was actually 10:00 Utah time. I have a friend from my mission that we have recently gotten in touch with over the summer, and so we stopped at his house for about an hour to say hi, then we pulled in to the first hotel we could find! I am now sitting on the bed at the Comfort Suites and it is 30 minutes past midnight.

The trip has gone well so far. Both kids have been really good. I only hope it lasts! Max sounds like he may be coming down with a cold, so hopefully it doesn't get too much worse.
